MINNEAPOLIS –
Cadyn Schwabe and
Terrell Huggins each logged their 10th multi-hit games of the season as the North Dakota State baseball team fell short at Minnesota, 12-9, on Tuesday night at Siebert Field.
The Bison (8-23, 4-2 Summit) quickly opened up a 4-0 advantage in the opening frame on four hits. Schwabe started the scoring advancing home on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0.
James Dunlap then blasted an RBI single straight up the middle before
Davis Hamilton drove an RBI single of his own into left field.
Will Busch capped the frame sending an RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 4-0.
Minnesota (9-22, 3-3 Big Ten) cut the deficit in half pushing across two runs on three hits to make the score 4-2 in the second inning. Following a scoreless third frame, Huggins connected on an RBI single into right to push the lead up three, 5-2, in the fourth. The Gophers quickly answered in the fifth sending across four runs on four hits to steal the lead after two-run double off the bat of Sam Hunt.
The Bison fought back in the sixth after Huggins blasted a three-run home run to left to retake the lead, 8-6.
Jack Steil finished out the inning scoring an unearned run after Hamilton reached on a fielding error to stretch the advantage to 9-6.
Jake Larson pushed back for the Gophers in the sixth with a two-run home run to cut the edge to one, 9-8. Riley Swenson kept the surge going for Minnesota in the seventh inning with a three-run home run to steal the lead, 11-9. Minnesota went on to put the game out of reach in the eighth with a solo home run from Ike Mezzenga to seal the 12-9 win.
The Bison totaled 10 hits as a team with Schwabe going 3-of-4 at the plate with a team-best three runs. Huggins added two hits with one run and game-high four RBI.
Max Loven made the start on the mound with one strikeout over 2.0 innings.
Nolan Johnson (1-2) picked up the loss with a team-best two strikeouts over 1.0 innings.
NDSU will return to Summit League play at St. Thomas on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
