FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State softball team fell to North Dakota Sunday afternoon in the series finale, falling 4-3 at Tharaldson Park after a late-inning rally fell short.
The Bison (28-17, 12-6 Summit League) took an early lead in the second inning. Chloe Woldruff walked and then stole second, setting up a run on an RBI single from Emilee Buringa on the next pitch.
However, North Dakota (9-37, 6-10 Summit League) answered back with its own RBI single scoring a runner from second in the top of the third. The Fighting Hawks would then break the 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Bison errors to score three unearned runs and take a 4-1 lead.
Following a two-out single from Woldruff and a double from Buringa in the sixth, Carley Goetschius brought the two Bison around to score with a single, cutting the deficit to 4-3. However, the Bison would strand two in the sixth and another in the seventh, three of 11 left on base in the game for NDSU.
Paige Vargas picked up the loss, as she allowed all four runs, one earned, on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. She finished with six strikeouts. Buringa finished with the only multi-hit performance for NDSU, but Goetschius, Woldruff and Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage had a hit and a walk each.
North Dakota State will wrap up the regular season on Friday and Saturday, as the Bison host Omaha in a three-game series at Tharaldson Park. The series will begin with a doubleheader against the Mavericks on Friday at noon, with the final game set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
