Bison Win Series at Omaha With Saturday Split

OMAHA, Neb. - The North Dakota State baseball team split a doubleheader against Omaha on Saturday, March 16, to earn a three-game series win on the opening weekend of league play. NDSU dropped the opener 7-4 but bounced back for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.

Cadyn Schwabe paced the Bison (5-14, 2-1 Summit) with three hits in the win, and Jake Schaffner, Kyle Law and Sam Canton had two hits apiece.

Law's RBI single capped a three-run third inning as NDSU erased an early 5-3 deficit. The Bison carried a 6-5 lead into the ninth when Law singled and scored on Sam Canton's triple, and Jack Steil lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.

Five NDSU relievers combined to hold Omaha scoreless over the final seven innings. Alex Karns took the win with 2 1/3 innings of work and Leland Wilson, Seth Thompson and Skyler Riedinger kept the Mavericks at bay before Joey Danielson came on in the ninth to get his third save of the year.

Omaha (3-15, 1-2 Summit) scored two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to take the first game of the doubleheader. Left-hander Luke Gainer fanned three Bison hitters and retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the save.

The teams played a doubleheader Saturday due to the cold weather forecast for Sunday in the Omaha area.

North Dakota State is back on the road next week to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln on Wednesday night before continuing on to Tulsa, Okla., for a three-game Summit League series against defending champion Oral Roberts.
