NDSU Softball Drops Pair in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The North Dakota State softball team dropped another pair of one-run games on Saturday, falling to Loyola Marymount 6-5 in eight innings before losing to host San Jose State 4-3 in the afternoon.
The Bison scored five runs in the bottom of the first against Loyola Marymount. Chloe Woldruff brought in two on a triple and scored another on a steal of home on a successful double steal to highlight the inning. However, LMU would score one in the fourth, three in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh to force extras. LMU then capitalized on the tiebreaker runner and held the Bison scoreless in the bottom half.
Macy Fry had a hit and a walk, the only Bison to reach safely twice. Five Bison had a hit in the game, as NDSU was outhit 11-5. Piper Reed picked up the loss in relief, allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and just three hits allowed. The Bison had 13 strikeouts offensively.
In game two, San Jose State scored three in the second to take the lead. The Bison chipped back with one run in each of the next three innings. Taylinn Warren scored on an error in the third, Riley Leadstrom scored Star Cortez on a squeeze bunt single in the fourth. Zoe King had an RBI double in the fifth. However, San Jose State would load the bases and score on a sacrifice fly on the bottom of the sixth for the winning run.
Six different Bison had a hit, as NDSU outhit the Spartans 6-4. Warren, Jasmyn Yessian and Leadstrom had a walk and a hit each. Kaitlyn Dunford picked up the loss in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
The Bison will wrap up the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday, taking on San Jose State again. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT.
