MADISON, Wis. – North Dakota State softball dropped a doubleheader to Wisconsin on Wednesday in the final non-conference games of the regular season, falling to the Badgers 8-0 and 10-2 at Goodman Diamond.
The Bison held Wisconsin scoreless in the first two innings of game one, allowing just one base runner, but the Bison were unable to capitalize on three base runners in the first two innings. Wisconsin then capitalized on a Bison error in the third and fourth, as the Badgers scored four runs in each inning to go up 8-0 and trigger the run-rule victory after five.
The Bison had five hits and two walks in the game, stranding six base runners. Star Cortez went 2-for-2 in the game with a walk and Chloe Woldruff was also 2-for-2 as she extended her hit streak. Savy Williams picked up the loss, allowing six earned runs in 3.1 innings.
In game two, Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second. The Bison loaded the bases in the third and Bella Dean drove in a run to cut the deficit to 2-1.
However, Wisconsin answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third and then a three-run home run to fuel a five-run inning in the fourth to go up 10-1.
The Bison loaded the bases again in the fifth and Savannah Henzler brought in another run with a fielder's choice, but NDSU would strand a runner at third to fall by run-rule for the second-straight game.
Woldruff finished with two of NDSU's seven hits in the game, as she extended her hit streak to eight games. Henzler and Ava Chavarria also reached twice each with a hit and a walk. Piper Reed picked up the loss, allowing six earned runs in 3.1 innings.
The Bison will continue their road trip, as NDSU heads to Brookings, South Dakota for a three-game series in Summit League play at South Dakota State on Friday and Saturday. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
