Veteran of the Bison pitching staff...His 38 2/3 innings a year ago are the second most of any returning hurler...Listed as a fourth or fifth starter during preseason workouts...Has entered graduate school and is balancing school, baseball and family life...2005 SEASON (JUNIOR): Made eight starts in 12 appearances...Finished the year 1-7 with an 8.61 ERA...Fanned a season-high six batters at Western Illinois (4/10) but took the loss...Went all six innings in the first game of a doubleheader at South Dakota State (4/17), but three unearned runs cost him a win...Struck out four and walked one in 5 2/3 innings for a win at Valparaiso (5/14)...2004 SEASON (SOPHOMORE): Assembled a 4-5 record and a 6.42 ERA in 10 starts...Bounced back five days after a rocky two-inning performance at North Dakota to throw the sixth no-hitter in school history against Augustana (S.D.) on April 18, fanning a season-high 11 Vikings in the process...His other shutout was a 9-0 win over Wayne State (Mich.)...2003 SEASON (FRESHMAN): Saw action in just two games as a freshman...Got a no-decision in an 8-7 win over Bemidji State in his only start...Went 2 1/3 innings in that contest before departing...2002 SEASON (REDSHIRT): Sat out the season as a redshirt in the Bison program...HIGH SCHOOL: Four-year letterwinner for Hope-Page High School and coach Mark Frost...Logged a 7-0 record and 2.12 ERA his sophomore year of Legion ball for Hope-Finley...Twirled a one-hitter in the only loss he suffered during a 5-1 senior campaign in high school ball...Averaged two strikeouts an inning over his career...Struck out 17 and surrendered only three hits in 6 1/3 innings of a regional championship game, but lost it on a home run...Struck out 17 again in a one-hitter of Northern Cass High School...Named all-conference three times and twice made the all-region first team...Also started four years on the football field for the Wolverines, passing for 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior while also rushing for 400 yards and five TDs...PERSONAL: Graduated with honors in August with a bachelor’s in agricultural systems management...Currently enrolled in the agribusiness and applied economics master’s program...Worked on the family farm during the off-season...Has a younger brother, Joel, who plays baseball for the Minnesota State-Moorhead club team, and a younger sister, Jacklyn...Uncle Steve Johnson played nose tackle for the Concordia-Moorhead football team...Great uncle John Otterness was a pitcher for Valley City State...Married...Wife’s name is Trisha...They have a 3-year-old daughter, Marissa Ann, and are expecting a second child...Jay is the son of Scott and Sandra Mitchell of Erie, N.D.
