
North Dakota State Women Drop Pair of Games During Final Day of Wolfe Sycamore Classic

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.--North Dakota State University dropped a pair of games -- 2-1 to Northern Illinois University and 5-3 to Butler University -- during the final day of Indiana State University's Wolfe Sycamore Classic on Sunday, March 6. The Bison finished third in the tourney with a 2-3 record behind first place Northern Illinois and second place Butler.
North Dakota State (6-6) is scheduled to begin play at Charlotte's Holiday Inn 49er Classic against Saint Louis University (2-5) at 9 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Charlotte, N.C. The Bison play host Conference USA member Charlotte (8-9-1) at 1 p.m. Friday.
NDSU freshman pitcher Allison Bakke limited Northern Illinois (5-3) to only two hits, solo home runs by Ellen Stoddard to lead off the third inning and Toni Del Toro with two outs in the fourth. Bakke struck out 11 batters and had no walks, but fell to 3-4 on the season.
The Bison had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Amy Hemingson and Lynnae Foshag belted back-to-back doubles with one out. NDSU outhit NIU 8-2, but stranded 12 runners on base. Bakke led the Bison with a pair of singles and a double. Foshag tied a school record after getting hit by a pitch twice.
Northern Illinois pitcher Lindsey LiChiana struck out 13 and walked four to improve to 4-2.
Butler University (4-4) jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage sparked by lead-off hitter Jill Meinhold, who went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the second and RBI double in the third. The Bulldogs bit the Bison by taking advantage of seven hits, four errors and two walks in the first three frames.
North Dakota State did rally with freshman Kristin Delgado drilling a two-run triple and scoring on a Grete Peterson run-scoring single. Jennifer Morse and Peterson each finished with two hits for the Bison.
Bekki Rasmussen worked the first 2.1 innings and was tagged with the loss to drop to 2-2 on the season. Bakke finished in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three over the final 3.2 innings. Jamie Wonderly picked up the win for Butler. Wonderly scattered six hits, struck out six and walked four.
