FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State had four run-scoring hits with two outs and completed a four-game sweep of South Dakota State with a 4-1 win in Summit League baseball Sunday, April 22, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Kyle Kleinendorst's bloop single into right-center field scored Tyler Steen with the eventual winning run in the seventh inning, and the Bison added two more in the eighth on back-to-back RBI triples from Wes Satzinger and Nick Anderson.
Reliever Kyle Kingsley (5-2) pitched a perfect seventh, eighth and ninth as North Dakota State improved to 29-9 overall and maintained first place in The Summit League with a 6-2 record.
NDSU starter Zach Wentz scattered seven hits over six innings with four walks and four strikeouts, and pitched out of two jams to keep SDSU (12-24-1, 2-6-0) scoreless through four.
The Jacks had the bases loaded with one out in the third when Zach Rhodes grounded to first baseman Nick Colwell, who stepped on first and threw to Steen at the plate to double up Zach Briggs trying to score from third.
SDSU loaded the bases again in the fourth on singles by Eric Cain and Daniel Marra and a walk to Briggs before Wentz got No. 9 hitter Andrew Melton to fly out to medium deep right field.
The Jackrabbits broke through in the fifth inning when Beau Hanowski and Andrew Phelan started with back-to-back singles. Rhodes' sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position and Phil Paquette's sac fly scored Hanowski.
NDSU answered in the fifth when Satzinger broke up SDSU starter Layne Somsen's perfect game with a leadoff single, moved up on Anderson's sac bunt, and scored on John Skrbec's single through the left side.
It was still 1-1 into the seventh when the Bison got three straight two-out singles from Steen, Skrbec and Kleinendorst to go ahead for good.
Satzinger's triple to the right-center gap in the eighth chased Somsen, who gave up eight hits, struck out seven, walked none, and dropped to 0-5 with the loss.
SDSU reliever J.D. Moore came on to face Anderson, who tripled past the outstretched glove of Hanowski in left field to score Satzinger. Anderson was thrown out trying for an in-the-park homer on a relay from Hanowski to Cain at shortstop to Briggs at the plate.
Hanowski and Marra each had two hits for SDSU. Satzinger and Skrbec had two hits each for NDSU. The Bison were 6-for-13 with two outs compared to 1-for-9 for the Jacks, who stranded eight base runners.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, before beginning a four-game Summit League series at IPFW on Friday, April 27.
