FARGO, N.D. - Minnesota scored seven runs in the eighth inning to beat North Dakota State 11-7 in college baseball Wednesday, April 25, before a record crowd of 1,781 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Six of those runs came after the second catcher's interference call of the inning against NDSU - and the third of the game - which negated an inning-ending double play with the Bison leading 6-4.
Minnesota (24-19) capitalized with a bases-loaded walk, three straight RBI singles by Matt Halloran, Dan Olinger and Kurt Schlangen, and an RBI double from JT Canakes to suddenly take a 10-6 lead.
North Dakota State (29-10) took control of the game early with a four-run third inning highlighted by Nick Anderson's bases-loaded infield single and Kirk Kenneally's two-run single to right.
The Bison went up 6-2 in the fourth when Tim Colwell hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on Nick Colwell's single into left-center.
Nick Colwell and Wes Satzinger both finished 3-for-5 for NDSU, and Tim Colwell was 2-for-5 with three runs scored. He singled in the first and scored from second on Satzinger's one-out double for a 1-0 lead.
Canakes was 3-for-5 to lead the Gophers, who took a 2-1 lead in the second on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Matt Puhl and Tony Skjefte's sacrifice fly. Four other Minnesota players had two hits.
Tom Windle, the third of four Minnesota pitchers, got the victory with a scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Windle struck out two and allowed two hits with no walks to even his record at 3-3.
Simon Anderson, the fourth of six NDSU pitchers and victim of the two catcher's interference calls in the eighth, dropped to 2-1 with the loss. Anderson was responsible for five runs, one earned, on two hits with one walk in a third of an inning.
Anthony Kliniske made his first career start for the Bison and was in line for the win after leaving with a three-run lead after his three scheduled innings. Kliniske allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
North Dakota State is scheduled to begin a four-game Summit League series at IPFW on Friday, April 27.
