WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The North Dakota State baseball team had the tying run on third base in the ninth, but were unable to score as the Harvard Crimson defeated the Bison 2-1 Thursday, March 20, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park.
NDSU senior Black Turbak led the bottom of the ninth off by getting hit by a pitch and senior Nick Altavilla followed with a single to left-center to put runners on first and second with no outs. Senior Michael Leach struck out, but Turbak advanced to third after John Skrbec flied out to centerfield to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Harvard reliever Tanner Anderson ended the NDSU threat by striking out sophomore Paul Funk and gave the Crimson a 2-1 victory.
The Bison (7-9) concluded the final game of their invitational schedule, while Harvard improved to 3-11 with the victory.
Both starting pitchers – Matt Timoney for Harvard and junior David Ernst for NDSU – kept the score deadlocked at 1-1 through six innings.
The Bison took a first-inning lead when senior Tim Colwell led off with a single and scored on senior Kyle Kleinendorst's RBI double off the left-field wall.
The Crimson responded in the second, using a fielding error to get a runner on before Anderson – as the designated hitter – smacked a RBI double to tie it at 1-1.
Harvard took advantage in the seventh by picking up three hits, with Kyle Larrow's RBI single that scored Mitch Klug from second serving as the eventual game-winning run.
Ernst gave up no earned runs and struck out three in a six-inning start that resulted in a no-decision. Junior Trevor Jaunich got NDSU out of two bases-loaded jams and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Junior Jay Flaa fell to 0-2 after throwing 2/3 innings for the Bison.
Colwell batted 3-for-4 and was the only Bison player with a multi-hit game
Timoney threw seven innings and gave up one run on five scattered hits to improve to 2-2 on the year for the Crimson. Anderson moved from designated hitter to pitcher and earned his third save of the season.
NDSU is set to play its first Summit League conference games of the season, as the Bison are scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Fort Wayne Mastodons beginning at 11 a.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind., Friday, March 28.
