SETTING THE SCENE: The North Dakota State baseball team is set to host in-state rival North Dakota at Newman Outdoor Field Tuesday, April 29, before traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a four-game Summit League series against the IPFW Mastodons Friday, May 2, through Sunday, May 4.

THE SERIES: North Dakota - Tuesday's showdown against UND will be the 176th meeting all-time dating back to 1910. The Bison trail UND in the series, 77-97-1. Last season, NDSU split a four-game set against UND, winning the opening two games of the series, 1-0 and 9-3, before dropping the second set of contests, 8-2 and 7-4. Fort Wayne - The four-game series at Fort Wayne will be meetings 29-32 in the all-time series that dates back to 2006. The Bison and Mastodons are tied in the series, 14-14, after IPFW swept NDSU in a Summit League doubleheader in Indianapolis on March 28, 8-2 and 3-2. NDSU's last victory against Fort Wayne occurred last season when the Bison swept a three-game series at home over the Mastodons.
THE OPPONENTS: North Dakota - UND enters Tuesday's contest at 8-20 overall and 8-7 in WAC play. Offensively, North Dakota is led by Jeff Campbell, who is hitting .274 with 29 hits in 106 at bats. He holds team-highs in RBI (21), home runs (5) and total bases (48) to go along with four doubles. Ryan Reese is hitting a team-best .319 with 15 RBI and four doubles while Jacob Threlkeld is a team-best 5-for-5 in stolen bases. Patrick Riewer is scheduled to start Tuesday's game on the mound for UND. Riewer is 0-0 on the season with a 3.00 ERA in three innings-pitched. He has allowed one earned run on three hits to go along with three walks and two strikeouts. As a team, North Dakota is hitting .255. UND's team ERA is 5.65. Fort Wayne - The Mastodons enter the week with an overall record of 16-26 and a Summit League mark of 8-8. Kristian Gayday leads the IPFW offense, hitting .349 with 45 hits in 129 at bats. Gayday has a team-high nine homers with eight doubles, a triple and 25 RBI. Carter DeBoe is hitting .329 with 33 RBI to go along with four home runs, three triples and eight doubles. Greg Kaiser is batting .316 with a team-high 35 RBI. Kaiser has eight round-trippers, a team-high four triples and seven doubles. On the mound, Dane Davis is 1-3 overall with a 5.89 ERA in 55 innings pitched. He has allowed 72 hits and 36 earned runs while walking 35 and striking out 35. Ryan Wells is 2-3 overall with a 5.02 ERA in 52 innings of work. Wells has given up 59 hits and 29 earned runs with 24 walks and a team-high 51 strikeouts. Connor Lawhead is 2-4 overall with a 4.55 ERA in 31.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 21 hits and 16 earned runs while walking 26 and striking out 44. As a team, Fort Wayne leads The Summit League in batting with an average of .291 but is last in team-pitching with an ERA of 6.59.
WEEKLY HONORS: North Dakota State has five Summit League award winners this season. Tim Colwell was named co-Player of the Week after going 11-for-16 (.688) with three doubles, four runs-scored and one stolen base in a four-game series against Western Illinois April 18-20. Kyle Kleinendorst was named co-Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 (.583) with three triples, two RBIs and five runs scored in a four-game series at Northern Colorado March 7-9. Wes Satzinger was co-Player of the Week after hitting 5-for-11 (.455) in three games at Murray State, where he homered and drove in two runs in a 4-1 win Friday, Feb. 28, and doubled twice with two runs scored in a 3-2 win Saturday, March 1. David Ernst was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just three singles in seven scoreless innings in the 4-1 win at Murray State. Parker Trewin was tabbed Pitcher of the Week after pitching a career-high seven innings and striking out a career-best 10 batters with one walk and five hits in the Bison's 13-1 win over Maine March 16.
CATCHING UP WITH THE BISON: Entering Tuesday's game with North Dakota, the Bison are 15-18 overall and 6-8 in Summit League competition after taking three of four games at Omaha last weekend. Offensively, Tim Colwell is batting a team-and league-high .388, going 50-of-129 at the plate, with seven doubles, four triples one homer and 13 RBI. The Shoreview, Minn., native also went a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts in NDSU's five games last week to increase his stolen base count to a team-high 12-of-13 in 33 games. Colwell's four triples ties him with teammate Kyle Kleinendorst and Fort Wayne's Greg Kaiser for the league-high. Along with a being tied for the team -and league-lead in triples, Kleinendorst has 20 RBI with seven doubles. He is hitting .300 with 33 hits in 110 at bats. Kleinendorst is second on the team in stolen base attempts, going 9-for-13. Jon Hechtner went 5-for-13 in NDSU's five games last week to improve his overall batting average to .234 with 11 RBI, a triple and a double. On the mound, David Ernst is 3-3 overall with a 3.05 ERA in 62 innings of work. Ernst has three complete games and has allowed 58 hits and 21 earned runs. He has walked 20 and struck out 27. Parker Trewin is 4-1 overall with a 3.02 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched. He has struck out a team-high 38 batters and walked 19 while allowing 40 hits and 15 earned runs. Trent Keefer 3-4 overall with a 5.53 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched. Keefer has struck out 35 and walked 19, but has allowed 59 hits and 25 earned runs. Reed Pfannenstein is 2-0 with a 3.47 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched. Pfannenstein has allowed 22 hits and nine earned runs while walking 12 and striking out 13. Tuesday's scheduled starter, Zach Mayo, is 0-0 overall with a 4.05 ERA in 6.2 innings. Mayo has allowed four hits and three earned runs while walking five and striking out eight. As a team, NDSU is hitting .258, good for fifth in The Summit League. The Bison are third in the league in pitching with a team ERA of 4.82.
149 AND COUNTING: North Dakota State senior Tim Colwell has started in 149 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season in 2011, ranking him among the national leaders in consecutive games-started. He has started all 33 games this season, 53 games in 2013, 60 in 2012 and made 44 starts out of 47 contests in 2011.
COLWELL SELECTED AS CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Tim Colwell was one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond selected Wednesday, March 19, as candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.
CLOSING THE DOOR: The NDSU bullpen had three saves in last weekend's four-game series at Omaha. Trevor Jaunich closed the door for the Bison in game two Friday and game one Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one to increase his save total to four on the season. Kevin Folman snagged his first save of the season in game two Saturday, going four innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs while walking just one batter and striking out four.
RECORD CHASE: North Dakota State seniors Tim Colwell and Wes Satzinger continue to move up the Bison career record lists in several categories. Colwell ranks second in at-bats (758), runs-scored (156) and hits (265), third in total bases (348), and already owns the triples record (18). Satzinger ranks second in doubles (56), fourth in hits (207), fifth in at-bats (656), eighth in sac bunts (14), and defensively is fourth in assists (399). Both players are tied for the career lead in sac flies (10).
SCORELESS STREAK: Starting pitcher David Ernst had a streak of 29 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings snapped March 8. Ernst pitched seven scoreless innings each of his first two starts at Southern California and Murray State before a one-out homer in the second at Northern Colorado. He pitched a two-hit shutout against Western Illinois in last year's Summit League tournament and blanked Fort Wayne the final five innings of his last regular season appearance of 2013.
PRESEASON PICKS: North Dakota State was picked third in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's five head coaches. Defending regular season champion Omaha was first, tournament champion South Dakota State was second, Western Illinois fourth and Fort Wayne fifth. NDSU, with 8 of 9 starters back from last year's 26-27 team, was picked as Baseball America's team to beat in its Summit League preview.
FOUR STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark four straight seasons and qualified for three straight Summit League tournaments reaching the championship game each of the past two years. This is NDSU's seventh season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent. The Summit League tournament is scheduled for May 22-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The four-team double-elimination tournament will not include Omaha, which is reclassifying from Division II and not eligible for postseason play in baseball until 2016.
THE COACH: North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) is in his seventh season with a 156-185 record, the second most wins in school history. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
