Drake Relays Results
DES MOINES, Iowa – North Dakota State's Maddie Van Beek captured a Drake Relays title and Erin Teschuk earned a runner-up finish for the Bison women's track & field team on Saturday.
Van Beek won the 3,000m steeplechase without much of a challenge, moving to the front of the pack early and controlling the race. She won in a personal-best time of 10:15.03 that ranks second all-time at NDSU and 25th in the nation this season.
"I felt in control the whole race, but I didn't really feel very good," Van Beek said. "My stomach wasn't feeling the best, but otherwise I felt in control the whole time. From the gun, I thought I could win this."
The senior cut just over one second off her previous personal-best time of 10:16.22 from one week ago at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Teschuk nearly added a Drake Relays championship of her own but settled for a runner-up finish in the 1500m. Her time of 4:18.88 is the second-fastest ever by a Bison, trailing only her own school record of 4:17.10 from the Stanford Invitational earlier this month.
Van Beek noted how the Drake Relays stage has served as a great platform for NDSU to showcase its track & field programs in recent years.
"Honestly, I think it really puts us on the map and gives us a name," said Van Beek. "I think we know that we can do this, but sometimes the rest of the nation doesn't realize that we can compete at that level, and we can. It's pretty cool to come in here and show that we can do that."
Jenny Guibert, Deidre Hahn, Sydney Bork and Taylor Janssen ran the distance medley relay in 12:04.99 for a 14th-place finish. They now stand as the fifth-fastest team in school history.
NDSU sophomore Katelyn Weimerskirch tied the second-best hammer throw mark of her career, throwing 190-7 (58.09m) for a fifth-place finish. Courtney Pasiowitz placed ninth with a throw of 182-10 (55.74m).
The Bison will host the Lyle Hokanson Classic in Fargo on May 1.
