NDSU Beats Hawai’i 4-1, Loses to No. 22 Baylor 8-5 to Gain Split at Outrigger Spring Fling

HONOLULU, Hawai'i. — Jacquelyn Sertic threw a two-hitter and Logan Moreland scored twice as North Dakota State University defeated host Hawai'i 4-1 in the second game Friday, March 11, at the Outrigger Spring Fling played at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Bison lost the first game 8-5 to No. 22-ranked Baylor.
NDSU (13-10) is scheduled to close out tournament play against Cal (11-9) at 2 p.m. Central Time and host Hawai'I (12-13) at 6 p.m. CT Saturday, March 12.
Sertic, a sophomore right-hander from Sparks, Nev., bounced back her first game showing and limited the Rainbow Wahine to only one hit – Nicole Lopez' double -- through the first 6-2/3 innings. However, Rachel Lack hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to avert the shutout.
Sertic (9-4) retired the first 10 batters in order. She faced 24 batters overall with seven strikeouts and one walk.
North Dakota State struck in the first inning. Logan Moreland reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Moreland led off the fourth with a double and scored on Cheyenne Garcia's RBI single. Alyssa Reina reached on an error pushing Garcia to second. Garcia scored as Hawai'i committed another error during the sequence and the Bison led 3-0.
NDSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Jackie Stifter drilled a one-out double to left center. Pinch-runner Joei Samper moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.
Hawai'i pitchers Brittany Hitchcock (4-6) and Kanan Aina Cabrales limited NDSU four hits. The pair combined to strike out four and walk one. Hitchcock picked up the loss.
Jessie Scroggins went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI to lead Baylor (18-5) to the win in the opener. Scroggins belted a two-run double to right center in the third and added a RBI double to left center in the top of the seventh to add insurance runs.
The Bears were added by a pair of NDSU errors that led to three unearned runs including a pair in the fourth scored by Kyla Walker and Ari Hawkins that put Baylor ahead 7-1. Walker and Hawkins each had two hits to support Scroggins.
North Dakota State battled back and quickly cut the deficit to 7-4 on Garcia's three-run home run to center. It was Garcia's second home run of the season. The Bison trimmed the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Reina's fielder choice sent Jenna Isbel home.
Sertic and Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy pitched for NDSU with Sertic picking up the loss. The pair combined to allow 13 hits and one walk.
Baylor used four pitchers with Sarah Beth Toben (1-0) recording the win and Kendall Potts earning the save. Potts pitch 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Katie Shoultz went 2-for-4 to pace the Bison.
