Weimerskirch Leads Barrage of Hammer Throw Personal-Bests at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Dakota State junior Katelyn Weimerskirch headlined several hammer throw personal-best marks that rank among the school's all-time top 10 on Friday afternoon at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Weimerskirch opened the outdoor season with a toss of 198-2 (60.41m) in the hammer throw, registering a new personal-best by four feet and ranking No. 2 in NDSU history. She was only 10 inches short of matching Emily Lesser's school record of 199-0 in the event.
Bison sophomore Hannah Frost moved up to third in school history in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 194-3 (59.21m) in the season opener. Frost's throw was a new personal-best by a margin of 16 feet.
A pair of Bison freshmen from Iowa both entered NDSU's all-time top 10 in the hammer throw as well. Shelby Gunnells (Solon, Iowa) ranks eighth all-time following a throw of 178-0 (54.27m) in her first outdoor meet. Maddy Nilles (Sherrill, Iowa) threw 172-3 (52.52m) in her first official meet for NDSU after redshirting the indoor season, ranking 10th in school history in the event.
Friday's hammer throw competition was one of the top in the nation early this season, with Weimerskirch taking sixth place and Frost placing eighth in the meet.
The Bison only competed in one event on Friday, with the majority of events scheduled for tomorrow at Sun Angel Stadium.
