NORWALK, Calif. – On a perfect night for a distance runner at the Mt. SAC Relays, North Dakota State senior Erin Teschuk did what she has done so many times before.
She turned the improbable into reality.
Teschuk broke the NDSU school record in the 5,000m by 25 seconds, running 15:41.35 to finish as the top collegian in an elite field. Based on marks entering the weekend, she now ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this year in the event.
Until Maddie Van Beek ran 16:06 last year, the NDSU 5,000m record had been Nancy Dietman's 16:36 since 1985. Now that Teschuk has done her thing once again, both of those marks have been left in the dust.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native now owns seven school records in track & field.
Van Beek, currently a volunteer assistant coach for the Bison, had an impressive race of her own on Friday night, running a career-best 9:52.21 for a runner-up finish in the 3000m steeplechase. Based on marks entering this weekend, Van Beek is now ranked No. 8 in the world this year in the event.
Senior Brittany Stangl cleared a new outdoor personal-best and matched her lifetime-best in the pole vault at 13-03.50 (4.05m). Stangl took first place in her section, and she ranks second all-time at NDSU in the outdoor pole vault.
Junior sprinter Morgan Milbrath had an impressive sixth-place finish in the Mt. SAC Relays 400m dash, running 53.97 to tie her collegiate-best which ranks sixth in NDSU history. Also in the 400m, Bison senior Melissa Kitching posted a personal-best of 54.84 to cut nearly one second off her previous best and stand at No. 7 on the NDSU all-time list.
Freshman Shelby Gunnells threw 47-06.25 (14.48m) in the shot put – a new outdoor season-best and good enough to rank her ninth in NDSU history. She placed third in the open section.
Reigning Summit League champion Amy Andrushko used a strong finishing kick to win her section of the 800m in 2:09.89. Junior Jenny Guibert ran 2:12.16 in the 800m for the third-fastest outdoor time of her career.
At the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., Katelyn Weimerskirch led the Bison women in the hammer throw with a toss of 197-2 (60.10m). Freshman Maddy Nilles posted a personal-best mark of 178-8 (54.45m) to move up to No. 8 in NDSU history.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., NDSU junior Allie Lahren set a new personal-best in the long jump, leaping 19-00.50 (5.80m) to go over 19 feet for the first time in her career.
Redshirt freshman Brittany Brownotter (Bismarck, N.D.) clocked 4:33.04 in the 1500m to rank third in The Summit League this season. Freshman Dakota Wood (Hazen, N.D.) ran 14.93 in the 100m hurdles for the second-fastest time of her season.
NDSU will conclude competition in California tomorrow, with action at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Beach Invitational.
