Bison Softball Rallies Past Omaha 8-5 to Complete Summit League Regular Season Undefeated

FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Omaha 8-5 on Sunday, May 7, at the Ellig Sports Complex to complete the Summit League regular season undefeated with a 17-0 record. The Bison become the sixth league team to go unbeaten and the first since DePaul went 22-0 in 1999. NDSU extended its league regular season win streak to 27 games second only to DePaul's 44 (1997-99).

NDSU (35-13, 17-0 SL) locked up the No. 1 in the Summit League Tournament on Saturday and is scheduled to play the South Dakota-South Dakota State winner at noon Thursday, May 12, at the Ellig Sports Complex.

North Dakota State trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. All six Bison seniors honored prior to the game took part in the rally. Maritza Lopez-Portillo blooped a double down the right field to score Jackie Stifter and pinch-runner Joei Samper. Portillo scored on a throwing error. Cheyenne Garcia belted a infield single to plate Jenna Isbel, while Alyssa Reina laced a RBI double to right center to drive in Logan Moreland.

Omaha (29-27, 12-5 SL) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings. Sydney Hames hit a solo home run to right in the first and Nicole Warren stroked a two-run single in the second. UNO opens tournament play at 2:30 p.m. Thursday against the Western Illinois-IUPUI winner.

NDSU cut the deficit to 3-1 on Reina's solo home run to center in the bottom of the second. It was Reina's eighth home run of the season. The Bison tied the game at 3-3 with two outs in the third on Julia Luciano's base hit through the left side.

Hames struck again in the top of the fourth with a RBI double to right center to put the Mavericks up 4-3. Omaha took advantage of a throwing error to widen the margin to 5-3 in the fifth inning. Lizzie Noble and Hames each had two hits.

North Dakota State outhit UNO 13-8 led by Reina, who went 3-for-4 with double, home run and two RBI. Lopez-Portillo and Moreland each had two hits. Moreland extended her hitting streak to 23 games, while Reina has reached base in 25 straight.

KK Leddy (12-7) allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked four to earn the complete game win. Abbie Clanton (11-12) picked up the loss with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
