Former NDSU SS Moreland Receives USA Baseball Women’s National Team Development Program Invite

DURHAM, N.C. – Former North Dakota State University all-region shortstop Logan Moreland received an invitation to participate in the USA Baseball Women's National Team Development Program on August 6-14 at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Washington, D.C.
Moreland, who hails from Woodland, Calif., spent the summer playing for Labadini Collecchio in the Italian Softball League. Former NDSU shortstop Nicole Rivera was a member of the gold medal winning USA Baseball Women's National Team at the 2015 Pan American Games.
"I'm excited to get to be able to work with the team from last year and learn from them and the coaching staff. Which is a plus because I've actually never played baseball," said Moreland.
"I have an older brother of three years though, who played baseball as long as I can remember, so I've been around the game forever and I'm hoping that will help me make the transition."
This summer Moreland hit .422 with four doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI in 16 starts for Labadini Collecchio. She scored 17 runs, was 11 for 13 in stolen bases and finished with a .711 slugging percentage.
Moreland started all 201 games she played from 2013-16 at shortstop. She hit .373 with 28 home runs and 132 RBI. She scored 175 runs and finished with 73 stolen bases, 22 doubles, six triples. She was the 2016 Summit League Player of the Year, and three-time all-tournament and two-time all-league selection.
For the first time, USA Baseball will partner with Baseball Canada in a cooperative effort to prepare and develop future national team members. In addition to its joint on-field programming, the teams will host a clinic on August 12 for girls age seven to 16.
USA Baseball and Baseball Canada will work out for the first two days and then play exhibition games Aug. 9-13.
The USA Baseball Women's National Team Development Program is offered in years a women's international baseball competition is not presented. It provides athletes an opportunity to connect with USA Baseball staff to better prepare for future national team experiences. The program includes skill development sessions, off-field education seminars, exhibition games and exposure to the Women's National Team staff and task force.
Four-time Women's National Team Pitching Coach Matt Weagle will serve as the Field Coordinator for the 2017 USA Baseball Women's NTDP. Under his direction, teams held a 2.07 and 2.16 ERA in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and a 1.29 ERA in 2016.
