NDSU Blanks Purdue 3-0, Shuts Down Chattanooga 5-1 at USF Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. – KK Leddy fired a one-hitter and Katie Shoultz hit a two-run triple as North Dakota State defeated Purdue 3-0 in the first game, then the Bison used a four-run fifth to turn back Chattanooga by the score of 5-1 on Saturday, March 16, in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Bison have won seven in a row.
NDSU (17-11) is scheduled to play Florida Gulf Coast (12-11) at 10:15 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 16, in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
North Dakota State senior righty Leddy, a native of Middleburgh, Fla., was locked in from the start and set down 20 straight Boilermakers in making a bid for her first collegiate no-hitter. Leddy allowed a two-out single to Kasey Wilhoit, but notched the final out for her fourth shutout of the season. She used 87 pitches to strike out eight and allowed no walks to improve to 9-6.
Purdue starter Kaitlyn Moody (5-4) matched Leddy stride for stride until the seventh inning when the NDSU offense got going. Sam Koehn reached on a fielder's choice to make it two outs, Montana DeCamp walked. Katie Shoultz tripled to right center on a 2-2 pitch. Shoultz scored on a Madyson Camacho single. Stephanie Soriano and Camacho both finished with two hits.
NDSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Chattanooga (20-7) in the bottom of the first. Shoultz led off with a single, moved to second on a Camacho base hit and third on Zoe Stavrou's sacrifice bunt. Maddie Hansen delivered the squeeze bunt to push Shoultz across the plate.
The Moccasins tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on Aly Walker's RBI single. Devan Brown and Walker each had two hits for UTC.
North Dakota State broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Camacho collected a run-scoring single, Stavrou knocked in a pair with a base hit to left and Cara Beatty closed out the scoring with a RBI single up the middle.
Kara O'Byrne (2-1) won her second straight outing with a complete game win. O'Byrne allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one. Celie Hudson (7-4) took the loss for UTC. Hudson gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked three.
Shoultz went 3-for-4 with two runs for the Bison, while Camacho added a pair of base hits.
