Bison Women Dominate Shot Put at Summit League Championships

VERMILLION, S.D. – The North Dakota State women's track & field team swept the top six places in the shot put to headline Friday's action on the second day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships. Akealy Moton (West Fargo, N.D.) captured her second straight outdoor shot put title to lead the charge.
 
With 9 of the 21 events completed, NDSU leads the women's team race with 125.5 points. South Dakota is close behind in second with 124.
 
Moton took the shot put crown to defend her 2019 title, throwing 57-06.25 (17.53m) and leading an NDSU sweep of the top six places. Shelby Gunnells was the runner-up, and sixth-year senior Maggie Schwarzkopf hit a career-best throw of 52-06.75 (16.02m) to take third.
 
Amanda Anderson threw a personal-best 52-02.00 (15.90m) in the shot put to take fourth place. She now ranks seventh all-time at NDSU.
 
Daejha Moss placed second in the high jump and fourth in the long jump for NDSU. She tied her outdoor-best in the high jump at 5-08.75 (1.75m) before leaping a career-best 19-06.25 (5.95m) in the long jump.
 
Bailey Cowling cleared 5-07.00 (1.70m) to tie for fourth in the high jump. Jodi Lipp placed sixth in the long jump at 19-00.50 (5.80m).
 
Senior Alaysia Freetly cut 13 seconds off her previous best in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking 10:45.61 for fourth place.
 
Sixth-year senior Klara Lyon cleared an outdoor personal-best of 13-02.25 (4.02m) in the pole vault, taking sixth place. She now ranks fifth all-time at NDSU. Senior Jocelyn Dinius took seventh place in the pole vault, clearing an outdoor PR of 12-08.25 (3.87m) to rank sixth in NDSU outdoor history.
 
In addition to the events that were completed on Friday, NDSU also advanced a strong number of qualifiers to Saturday's finals on the track.
 
Ansley Schug ran a career-best 13.76 in the prelims of the 100m hurdles, tying for third-fastest in school history. Freshman Salmata Korgho (14.19) also advanced for the Bison, and Bailee Dierks (personal-best 1:02.97) and Schug both qualified for the 400m hurdles final.
 
Kendra Kelley advanced to the conference finals in both the 100m and 200m. She clocked 11.89 in the 100m dash and was the fastest qualifier to the 200m dash final, running 24.23 in the prelims.
 
All three Bison women entered in the 400m dash qualified for Saturday's final – Nell Graham (55.58), Alyssa Lind and Grace Zimmerman.
 
Peyton Frolek (outdoor PR 2:09.40) and Katie Bye (career-best 2:12.15) cruised into the 800m final.
 
Action resumes with field events at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Track events start at 12:20 p.m.
