FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team has qualified 14 entries for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds held May 26-29 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
A total of 12 Bison men will compete – including the NDSU 4x400m relay team and three individuals entered in a pair of events – marking the largest group of West Prelims qualifiers in school history.
The top 12 finishers in each event at the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12. Benji Phillips and Alex Talley are the top-ranked Bison entering the meet, with Phillips ranked third in the West for the javelin, and Talley ranked among the top six in both the shot put and hammer throw.
Kristoffer Thomsen (11th in shot put) also stands inside the top 12 entering the meet, and Maxwell Otterdahl (discus & shot put), Trevor Otterdahl (hammer), and Brandon Lewis (long jump) are all ranked in the top 20.
NDSU's 14 men's entries are tied for the second-most in school history.

How to Advance
The top 12 finishers in each event at the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12.
In the hammer, javelin, discus, shot put and long jump, all 48 competitors will receive a single round of three attempts. The top 12 marks overall advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 400m, 800m and 110m hurdles, the top three finishers from each heat plus the next six fastest times (24) will advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. The top three finishers from each quarterfinal heat plus the next three fastest times (12) will advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 4x400m relay, the top three from three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times (12), advance to the NCAA Championships.
