SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – North Dakota State softball senior pitcher Paige Vargas and sophomore outfielder Emilee Buringa were named to the 2022 Summit League Softball Academic All-League Team, announced the league office Wednesday morning.
Vargas becomes a repeat winner of the award, as she also won it in 2020, while Buringa was named to the team for the first time.
Vargas, who was a Second Team All-Summit League selection this season for the second time in her career, holds a 3.80 grade-point average in Exercise Science. The Mission Viejo, California native made 32 appearances in the circle for the Bison in her senior season, posting a 16-10 record with a 2.21 earned run average. A workhorse for the Bison, Vargas tossed 171.1 innings and had five shutouts on the season, including a two-hitter against Virginia and a three-hitter against Omaha at the Summit League Championships.
Buringa, who also earned Second Team All-Summit League honors this season after starting every game in centerfield for NDSU, holds a 4.0 GPA in Education. The St. Charles, Minn. native was also voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in May. The sophomore finished the season with a .298 batting average, seven home runs, 37 RBIs, and a team high 44 runs, 27 walks and a .415 on base percentage.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions, except pitchers who must have participated in 20 percent of their team's total contests.
Nominations are brought forth by sports information directors from the league's participating members, and voting is conducted by both SIDs and FARs. The teams are made up of ten student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
