ST. PAUL, Minn. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team used a strong second half to pick up a 4-1 win over Chicago State University Monday afternoon in the final game of the St. Thomas Women's Soccer Invitational at South Field.
Loretta Wacek broke a 1-1 tie in the 67
th minute as
Lavin Douglass set up the sophomore, who scored her first collegiate goal. Wacek's goal would also prove to be the game winner. It was also the first career assist for Douglass.
The Bison (2-0-2) would pad the lead just 10 minutes later, as defender
Jess Hanley rose up on a
Kelsey Kallio corner kick to head past Alexa Seiler and double the Bison lead in the 77
th minute. It was Hanley's fourth career goal and first since her game winner against Oral Roberts in October of last season.
NDSU would go up by three just three minutes later, as Madelyn Grate slipped a through ball between defenders on the back line to set up
Olivia Lovick for her first goal of the season in the 80
th minute. It was Lovick's ninth career goal and first away from Dacotah Field. Her last goal also came in last season's win over ORU. For Grate, it was her first career collegiate point with the assist.
The Bison took the lead early, as
Paige Goaley found the back of the net on another Kallio corner kick in the third minute. It was Goaley's second of the season, with both goals coming in the first three minutes of play.
It is the first time Kallio has had multiple assists in a game and the junior moved into sole possession of the active lead for assists, with eight in her career. Kallio finished the trip to St. Paul with four points after her goal on Saturday.
After the Bison took the early lead, the Cougars (0-4-0) would answer back in the 14
th minute a Stacey Hailey slipped a shot past
Sofia Howe in Chicago State's only shot on target in the game. The goal snapped a 213:22 scoreless streak for the Bison defense.
North Dakota State would dominate the game, holding 65 percent of the possession while outshooting Chicago State 16-3. It's the first time the Bison have scored at least four goals in a game since a 4-2 win at Eastern Washington on September 20, 2019. It also ties the second-most goals in a game scored under
Mike Regan.
The win sees the Bison extend their unbeaten run to begin the season to four games and five games (3-0-2) overall, including a win in the season finale last year at St. Thomas on South Field. NDSU is now 3-0-0 all time when playing on South Field.
NDSU will now head west to the Rocky Mountains for its first true road games of the season as the Bison are slated to take on Wyoming and Northern Colorado next Friday and Sunday. The Bison will first travel to Laramie, Wyoming to battle the Cowgirls on September 2. The Bison will then face the Golden Bears of Northern Colorado in Greeley on September 4.
