Senior Douglass Caps Senior Day Victory for Bison Soccer Over Drake

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team picked up a thrilling 1-0 victory over Drake on Sunday, as senior Lavin Douglass scored the winning goal to cap off senior day for the Bison at Dacotah Field.

Douglass scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute on a corner kick. Kelsey Kallio sent in a corner that was knocked down by the Drake defense to the feet of Alicia Nead, who played a ball through a cluster of Bulldog defenders and found the feet of Douglass. The senior then turned and pushed a right-footed shot past Drake goalkeeper Vianey Lopez to put the Bison in front.

The Bison would see just one shot from Drake the rest of the way to see out their second-consecutive 1-0 victory. North Dakota State outshot Drake 14-8 in the contest, including 7-4 in efforts on goal. Senior goalkeeper Sofia Howe made four saves for her second cleansheet of the season.

It appeared the NDSU could have taken the lead on a corner kick in the first minute of the game, as Paige Goaley had a header blocked before a shot from Ashleigh Heely was partially cleared by a Drake defender just as it was crossing the goal line.

Kallio and Douglass would then force saves from Lopez 10 minutes later before Drake could get its first shot of the game.

After the first 45 minutes, NDSU had eight shots to five from Drake. Howe had three saves in the opening half.

The closest chances in the second half before the Douglass goal came off the feet of Olivia Watson and Kallio. Watson had a long-range strike from about 30 yards that forced a diving save out of Lopez in the 51st minute. Kallio then had a free kick sail inches over the cross bar in the 75th minute.

For Douglass, it was her first goal of the season, as she has now scored in each of her four seasons with the Bison. She now has three points on the season, as she had an assist in the win over Chicago State.

Nead picked up her second assist of the season and third overall. Howe now has 73 career saves with the Bison and two cleansheets.

The Bison have recorded back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season, but the first time with both games resulting in victories.

North Dakota State will now head back on the road to wrap up non-conference play, as the Bison travel to Idaho and Montana to face a pair of Big Sky foes before Summit League action gets underway. The Bison take on Idaho on Friday, September 16 in Moscow, before a trip to Missoula to take on Montana on Sunday, September 18.
