SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The North Dakota State baseball team dropped a doubleheader against UC San Diego, 7-1, and, 14-6, on Monday afternoon at Triton Ballpark in the Tony Gwynn Classic.
In game one, NDSU (1-7) came up short against UC San Diego (4-4), 7-1. Following a scoreless opening inning, the Tritons grabbed a 1-0 lead following an RBI double from Noah Sudyka. The Bison responded in the fourth to lock contest, 1-1, after
Druw Sackett was caught stealing allowing
Peter Brookshaw to get home for the run.
The game then went scoreless for three innings until the Tritons pushed across three runs on three hits to grab a 4-1 advantage following an RBI single from Jalen Smith. UC San Diego cracked the game open in the third adding some insurance with three runs on three hits to push its lead to 7-1. NDSU couldn't get anything going the rest of the way and fell short, 7-1.
Tristen Roehrich (0-2) picked up the loss tossing five strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Skyler Riedinger also tossed two strikeouts over 1.2 innings.
In game two, the Tritons used an 11 run eighth inning to top the Bison, 14-6. NDSU got off to a fast start opening up a 3-0 lead after
Terrell Huggins launched a two-run home run into left field in the first inning. Schwabe then got on following a throwing error to allow
Zach Kluvers to get across for an unearned run to stretch the lead to 4-0 in the second frame.
UC San Diego battled back adding two runs in the second and one in the fifth to cut the deficit down to one, 4-3, after Matt Halbach connected on an RBI single. Sackett responded for the Bison in the sixth with his first triple of the season into right field to send Schwabe across to increase the lead to 5-3.
Stephen Lund then reached on an error to send Sackett home to make the score 6-3. However, the Tritons then erupted for 11 runs on seven hits in the eighth inning to steal the lead, 14-6. NDSU wasn't able to get a rally going in the ninth and dropped the contest, 14-6.
Schwabe went 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs and one stolen base, while Sackett notched two runs with one double, one triple and one RBI. Huggins posted two hits, including his second home run of the season to go along with two RBI and one run.
Parker Puetz made his second start of the season with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
Joey Danielson (0-1) picked up the loss with one strikeout over 0.2 innings.
NDSU will be back in a action with midweek matchup at Arizona State on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. CT
