Nilles Claims Hammer Throw Record, Moves Into NCAA Top 10

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State junior thrower Maddy Nilles moved up to No. 9 in the NCAA and added more than three feet to the school record in the hammer throw, launching a toss of 216-3 (65.93m) on Friday afternoon at the NDSU Tune-Up.
Nilles broke the previous school record of 212-11 set by Katelyn Weimerskirch last year. Both Nilles and Weimerskirch hail from Wahlert Catholic HS in Dubuque, Iowa.
Nilles was part of a slew of personal-best performances from the Bison women in the hammer throw. Competing unattached, Bison junior Hannah Frost threw 201-2 (61.32m) for second place in the meet. Junior Shelby Gunnells reached 200-2 (61.01m) to rank 41st in the country this season, and sophomore Amy Herrington threw 199-4 (60.77m) to rank 43rd. Sophomore Bailey Retzlaff posted a mark of 196-3 (59.83m).
Nilles, Gunnells, Herrington and Retzlaff now rank first, third, fourth and sixth, respectively, on the NDSU all-time list in the event.
Sophomore Maggie Schwarzkopf threw a personal-best 50-08.25 (15.45m) to win the shot put and move up to No. 6 on the NDSU all-time list. Junior Kelsey Laufenberg improved her shot put personal best to 49-09.75 (15.18m) and her discus personal best to 151-9 (46.25m).
Senior Jaelin Beachy continued her impressive outdoor season, winning the 100m hurdles in 14.58 – the second-fastest time of her career. Freshman Ansley Schug ran the second-fastest time of her season in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 14.76, and sophomore Macy Denzer ran a personal-best 14.84.
Maea Wall won the 400m hurdles with a significant personal-best of 1:03.50, ranking her fourth in The Summit League this season. Sophomore Paige Harris clocked 1:04.19 for third.
Senior Lauren Gietzen cleared 13-01.50 (4.00m) to win the pole vault. Lindsay Wangerin won the javelin with the second-best throw of her career at 135-8 (41.35m).
Freshman Jenna Kes (Jordan, Minn.) took first place in the triple jump, posting a season-best mark of 38-08.25 (11.79m).
Deidre Hahn, Gabby Grommesh, Alyssa Lind and Alexis Woods won the 4x100m relay for NDSU, clocking a season-best 46.65.
Unattached freshman Kelby Anderson finished first the 1500m, running 4:36.50. Junior Kayla Huhnerkoch was second in 4:39.24.
