Biography

2011 SEASON (JUNIOR): Played and started in a school-record 54 games...Made 31 starts at third base and 13 at first base in addition to his duties as a pitcher and designated hitter...Hit .292 and led the team in at-bats (216), runs (39), hits (63), doubles (17), homers (5) and total bases (95)...His 216 at-bats were the second most in NDSU single-season history...Stretched a team-best 14-game hitting streak from the second weekend of play in February through the end of the end of spring break...Went 26-for-62 (.419) over that span and raised his batting average from .111 to a season-high .380...Named Summit League Player of the Week after hitting .462 with three doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored in three games at Murray State...Capped the streak with a 4-for-6 game against Butler...On the mound, went 3-6 with a 7.12 ERA in nine starts and 12 total appearances...Struck out 29 and walked 16 in 54 1/3 innings, the third most innings on the staff...Season-high six strikeouts vs. Illinois State...Pitched a seven-inning complete game for a 4-3 home win over Centenary...Named as a Distinguished Scholar to the Summit League Winter/Spring All-Academic Team and to the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence...2010 SEASON (SOPHOMORE): Made all 52 starts as the No. 3 hitter in the lineup with 44 games at first base and eight on the mound...Led the team in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.389), at-bats (193), runs (41), hits (75), doubles (17), homers (7), RBIs (42), total bases (113), slugging (.585), on-base percentage (.466) and stolen bases (4)...Hit safely in 36 games and 26 were multiple-hit games...Also led the Bison with 11 multiple-RBI games...Career-high five RBIs in the fourth game at Western Illinois where he went 4-for-6 and pitched seven innings for his first win of the year...Went 4-for-5 against Dakota Wesleyan the next game to cap a 15-game hitting streak that raised his batting average from .237 in March to .460 in April...Stayed over the .400 mark until May 16...Two-time Summit League Player of the Week...Summit League Pitcher of the Week after throwing his first career shutout at IPFW...All-Summit League second team starting pitcher...Went 5-1 and ranked third in the league-only stats with a 3.32 ERA in six starts...Led the league-only stats in complete games (4) and innings pitched per game (7.22)...Also ranked second in victories (5) and seventh in opponent batting average (.259)...Went 5-2 overall with a 4.21 ERA in 10 appearances...Struck out a season-high five at Centenary and fanned four in each of his final four starts, all complete-game wins...Voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team as an infielder with a 4.0 cumulative GPA through fall 2009 semester...Named as a Distinguished Scholar to the Summit League Winter/Spring All-Academic Team and to the Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence...2009 SEASON (FRESHMAN): Made a team-high 43 starts in 44 games for the Bison, including 37 at first base and six on the mound...Was the pitcher and DH in five of those starts...Second on the team with a .349 batting average that ranked 10th in school history...Led the team in at-bats (169), hits (59), doubles (11), homers (3), RBIs (25) and total bases (81)...Hit over .300 through April and May...Raised his batting average 39 points with a 16-game hitting streak to end the year, including nine multi-hit games in that span...Season-high three RBIs against IPFW and had a season-high four hits in the first game of the Murray State doubleheader...On the mound, went 3-2 with a 5.03 ERA in nine appearances...Struck out six in a no-decision vs. St. Thomas (Fla.)...Named Summit League Pitcher of the Week after he fanned four in a complete-game 3-1 win at South Dakota State to salvage a series split...Took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and threw only 94 pitches in nine innings at SDSU...Named to the Summit League Winter/Spring All-Academic Team...HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated in 2008 from Bismarck Century High School...Four-year starting pitcher, first baseman and shortstop for coach Mike Gustavsson...Three-time all-state performer...Class A Player of the Year in 2008 when he hit .533 with three home runs and a .783 slugging percentage...Had a 1.54 ERA and 64 strikeouts his senior year...Tossed two perfect games in his career...Three-year starter for the Bismarck Governors American Legion team under coach Mike Skytland...Made one third-place state finish and two runner-up finishes...Hit .507 with 12 homers, 15 doubles, 67 RBIs, and a .903 slugging percentage his final season and was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" on Oct. 6, 2008...Three-year starting quarterback and linebacker in football for coach Ron Wingenbach...Passed for 2,226 yards and was responsible for 21 touchdowns his senior year, including 10 rushing TDs...Participated in the Montana/North Dakota all-star football game...PERSONAL: Son of Doug Wentz and Cathy Domres, both of Bismarck, N.D...Has two younger brothers, Carson Wentz and Luke Domres...Carson, a 6-foot-5 quarterback, plays at North Dakota State...Zach was recruited as a walk-on QB, but stayed with baseball full-time...Father played football at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D...Majoring in health education and physical education...Hit .265 with seven doubles and 14 RBIs over 46 games for the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League last summer.
